Boy, oh boy, news outlets certainly went crazy this past week as they seized on the news that one one out of 25 early stage tech proposals that received funding as part of NASA’s Innovative Advanced Concepts program centered around exploring the idea of using robotic bees on Mars. That set off a cascade of news items claiming NASA was all set to send robot bees to Mars. Makes for a great headline, I suppose, when actually, it’s a grant for investigating whether the whole idea would work out.
I don’t just cover the hard space exploration stories on the Martian Soil Twitter, but also try and highlight the use of Mars in popular culture like books, movies or video games. In fact, I have a whole Twitter list dedicated to people working on projects like that. This week saw a few neat news items on that front, including a planned mobile version of the Terraforming Mars board game. More details in the section below.
Also, what’s up with puns in news headlines this past week? First ’NASA’s New Mars Mission Is Groundbreaking – Literally’, then ’NASA reveals ‘plan bee’ for Mars exploration’ and finally ’The first Antarctic greenhouse harvest may lettuce go to Mars’. I saw keep it up!
PS: This Mars Curiosity shirt is just adorable, don’t you think?
PPS: Someone please tell me they got the Friends reference?

Being stranded on Mars by inopportune launch windows is basically the worst. So I created a map of all the Earth-Mars (with free return) and Mars-Earth launch windows over the next decade or so. It shows the dV needed on any given launch day and for any given flight duration. https://t.co/ADOFIqOsLa
