In the last issue, I mentioned a recent streak of gorgeous HiRISE shots on their Beautiful Mars tumblr. HiRISE will add colorization to some of their satellite images, which highlight different terrain types better, and that has the added side effect of making them look a bit more alive than they’d otherwise appear to the human eye. There’s some more technical details available from HiRISE on their image formats and processing, for those who want to read up on it.
In Mars science news, we’ve got a new theory that its moons Phobos and Deimos might have been formed after an impact between proto-Mars and a dwarf-planet-sized object.
The Mars InSight mission is due to launch in under two weeks, but as we wait, Europe’s own 2020 Mars rover has been getting some press coverage of its own this past week. We should hear which of the two final landing site candidates, Oxia Planum and Mawrth Vallis, get chosen by October or November this year.
For podcast listeners, Gimlet Media released all seven episodes of its new The Habitat show, focusing on the year long 2015-16 HI-SEAS Mars analog mission in Hawaii.
